Guidebook for “China Studies” International Summer School (CSISS) 2017
 
Thank you for choosing the International Summer School at Shandong University (SDU). We look forward to your enrollment in the units of study that we offer in the periods between regular semesters.
 
To ensure your successful and convenient start at Shandong University, we will provide you with detailed information on visa application, pick-up service upon arrival, course selection, program fees and optional tours payment, scholarships, and accommodation.
 
Please read this guide carefully, and follow the procedures to avoid unnecessary delay in your arrival to Shandong University.
 


1. COURSE AND CREDIT

 
1)     CSISS2017 provides “China Studies” courses plus a series of lectures. All courses and lectures will be taught in English.
 
2)     Lectures will focus on the introduction of China Studies from a variety of perspectives. If you want to explorer further on any topic, you can choose a complete course on that topic.
 
3)     Participants are required to attend the courses and lectures, and the program will confer 2 academic credits after you pass the examinations at the end of CSISS2017.
 
4)     Students who wish to transfer CSISS program credits are advised to consult with appropriate academic officials at their home institution before the program begins.
 

 

2. FEES AND PAYMENT

 
1) Program fees are structured as follows:
Registration fee 400 RMB (Appx. USD 65)
Tuition fee 7,000 RMB (Appx. USD 1,100)
Accommodation 1,400 RMB (Appx. USD 220)
Course materials and student card 200 RMB (Appx. USD 35)
 
2) You may pay the above fees on site at Shandong University International Student Center office on Monday, July 31. Please pay in cash and in RMB. You may also pay with bank card (Only Unionpay accepted). Traveler’s checks, and overseas currencies are NOT accepted.
 
3) If you prefer to transfer your program fees, please transfer to the university bank account with the information as follows:

4) Scholarship winners from Shandong University’s partner universities will be exempted from such payment.
 
5) The cost for the optional tours to other cities such as Mt. Tai and Qufu, Beijing or Qingdao, etc., is not included in the program fees. Participants will submit their preferences on optional tours on July 31 and make payments on site accordingly.
 
6) Students will be responsible for any additional costs of the program, including insurance, travel, visa fees and their own daily living expenses (food, commuting, etc). Average daily expenses are estimated to be 100 RMB.
 
7) All participants MUST purchase travel insurance before traveling to China. The insurance must include medical insurance and personal accident insurance.
 
8) All participants will be responsible for medical expenses incurred during their stay in China. Any participants who wish to stay in China before or after the program are responsible for associated expenses and personal safety. Shandong University bears no responsibility for your private activities unrelated to the Program.

3. ACCOMMODATION
 
1) We have arranged on-campus accommodations for all participants. However, your preferred room type may not be available. Housing will be available from July 28 to August 12, 2017.

2) Participants who do not use, and arrive independent of, the airport pick-up service should check in at “LIU YUAN (留园)” on SDU Central campus in Jinan on July 29-30, between 8:00am and 10:00 pm. Shandong University staff will welcome you in the lobby.

4. SCHOLARSHIP

 
1) A limited number of scholarships for Summer School study are available. Currently, SDU Center of China Studies offers Mingde Scholarship and Academic Excellence Award. The Mingde Scholarship will be determined upon admission and the Academic Excellence Award will be evaluated based on participants’ performance during the summer school period.

Mingde Scholarship B 50% of program fees
Mingde Scholarship C 20% of program fees
*     Both admission evaluation and Mingde Scholarship award evaluation will be conducted automatically and simultaneously. You do not need to submit scholarship application separately.
*     Students from Shandong University’s partner universities will be automatically granted Mingde Scholarship A.
 
3) Academic Excellence Award

*     All CSISS participants will be evaluated for the Academic Excellence Award based on their grades and class attendance.
*     Academic Excellence Award will be distributed at the farewell party.

5. VISA APPLICATION

 
1) To apply for the student visa (X2 visa), please present to the Chinese embassy or Consulate in your country the attached Admission Notice. Please refer to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate website for other documentation required to support your visa application.  
 
2) After successfully obtaining your X2 visa, please purchase your flight tickets to China in your nearest convenience. Please provide your arrival information through the online application system, or email us at chinastudies@sdu.edu.cn.

6. PICK-UP SERVICE

 
CSISS2017 will provide free pick-up service at Jinan Yaoqiang Airport (济南遥墙机场) and Jinan West Railway Station (济南西站) on July 30, 2017.
 
1) Schedule: Buses will depart at 13:00 and 20:00. If you arrive before this time, our advice is to have coffee or breakfast at the airport while you wait, and then make use of the pick-up service when it begins.
 
2) Jinan Yaoqiang Airport(济南遥墙机场): Volunteers holding a “Shandong University” board will meet you at the 5th and 6th arrival gates (the International Exit).
 
3) Jinan West Railway Station(济南西站): Volunteers holding a “Shandong University” board will meet you at the exit of the Jinan West Railway Station.
 
4) Arrival on another day of time
*     To use public transport to reach Shandong University, please use a map service such as Google Map, Baidu Map (in Chinese) or Amap (in Chinese). It may be wise to print or save the map of route to avoid getting lost.
*     You can also take a taxi to SDU at your own expense. To take a taxi, you can show the attached card to the taxi driver, he/she will know to whom to contact and how to get to SDU. It will cost you around 120-150 RMB from Jinan Yaoqiang Airport or 50-70 RMB from Jinan West Railway Station, depending on the traffic.

7. NO CASH SURVIVAL

 
China is going cashless. People are moving away from traditional banking systems to more efficient and user-friendly financial technologies. Nowadays, mobile payment has become a part of people’s everyday lives in China. To give our students a unique experience in China, CSISS participants are encouraged to live without cash during this period and finds out how you can pay for things digitally.
 
To assist your “survival”, CSISS volunteers will help you use digital wallet, top-up your account, make payment or transfer, etc.
 

8. OPTIONAL TOURS

 
To help participants better experience Chinese city and culture, CSISS2017 will arrange optional tours to Qufu & Mt.Tai, and extended optional tours Beijing or Qingdao. Please refer to the attached summer school schedule for more details about the date of each tour.
 
1) At least 10 candidates are required for the field trip, otherwise it will be cancelled.
 
2) Optional tours are NOT included in the Program fees. Participants will submit their preferences on optional tours on July 31 and make payments on site accordingly.
 
3) Total cost of tour to Qufu & Mt. Tai
Date August 5 - 6
Total cost 800 RMB per person, which include the shuttle service from Jinan to Qufu and from Mt. Tai to Jinan, the high-speed railway ticket from Qufu to Taishan, travel agency service, lunch, entrance tickets, and one-night accommodation in Taishan city.
CSISS subsidy CSISS will waive certain fees for participants from partner institutions, participants only need to pay the remaining amount.
Note Dinner and other personal expenses are not included.
The cable car costs 100 RMB per ride per person in Mt. Tai.
 
4) Extended optional tour to Beijing or Qingdao
Summer school officially ends on August 11 at the end of the graduation ceremony. Participants may either leave Jinan after that or choose to participate the extended optional tour to Beijing or Qingdao and leave China after the tours.

Date August 12 - 13
Total cost 1000 RMB per person, which include the high-speed railway ticket from Jinan to Beijing, travel agency service, lunch and dinner, entrance tickets, and one-night accommodation in Beijing.
CSISS subsidy CSISS will waive certain fees for participants from partner institutions, participants only need to pay the remaining amount.
Note Other personal expenses, dinner and accommodation fees of August 13 are not included.
 
Extended optional tour to Qingdao
Date August 12 - 13
Total cost 700 RMB per person, which include the high-speed railway ticket from Jinan to Qingdao, travel agency service, lunch and dinner, entrance tickets, and one-night accommodation in Qingdao.
CSISS subsidy CSISS will waive certain fees for participants from partner institutions, participants only need to pay the remaining amount.
Note Other personal expenses, dinner and accommodation fees of August 13 are not included.
 
5) If you would like to participate the extended optional tour to Beijing or Qingdao, depending on your home country location and optional tour preference, it is our advice that participants book round-trip international flight tickets to Beijing or Qingdao, so that you can leave China directly after the trip and hence avoid the hassles.
 

9. ONLINE APPLICATION

 
Students currently enrolled in a college/university with at least one semester of attendance are eligible to apply.
 
“Online Application System” is available for prospective participants, please access www.apply.sdu.edu.cn for more information, submit application and track application status.
